SOS Online Abuse of Politicians

The material is a 20 minute video presentation describing the GATE team's work investigating online abuse of UK politicians. The video comprises slides and a voice-over. The video was prepared for an undergraduate module at Sheffield University, and is suitable for any audience with an interest in social media analysis, as it makes no assumptions about the knowledge viewers already have. The topic is first introduced with a short video in which UK politican Diane Abbot talks about her experience of receiving abuse online. We then talk about our process of gathering Twitter data using GATE tools, and performing statistical analysis on it. We then summarise the findings. We conclude with some suggestions for further reading. The presentation emphasises ethics and the social implications of online abuse, and provides a link to the dataset on the SoBigData website.
